In a world of increased connectivity and a heightened desire for social inclusiveness, the hospitality space has been abuzz with concepts like 'co-working' and 'co-living' in recent years. At the same time, social clubs, which have traditionally been built on creating a sense of luxury and exclusivity with joining fees in the thousands, have continued to thrive. While the end result of the two concepts seems to be at odds - inclusivity vs. exclusivity - their core purpose appears similar: to bring together people who share similar interests.

For so many years, hoteliers who made the decision to switch to club management were looked down upon by their "true hospitality" colleagues. After all, running a club used to be tantamount to regulating a flock of entitled folks proud to belong where their money would isolate them from the riffraff. A place where they could insist on keeping the Reuben on the menu and restrict access to a number of minorities including invented ones.

Seventeen percent of America's restaurants permanently closed in 2020 (source: CNN Business). By the end of last year, hospitality workers saw an unemployment rate of 16.7% (source: U. S. Bureau of Labor Statistics). It is no surprise that in the face of a deadly disease, travel restrictions and shutdowns have hit the leisure and hospitality industry the hardest. Yet, one segment of the industry that appears to be thriving is country clubs. Unlike other businesses in the hospitality industry, country clubs are exclusive, offer socially-distanced outdoor amenities and activities, and allow people who can afford it, a way to escape without flouting CDC guidelines or travel restrictions. While restaurants and hotels across the country saw record low revenues, country clubs saw record high interest in memberships.
